PROTEA RIDGE - KRUGERSDORP

Date: Sunday 2nd May

Venue: Bosvark Adventure Park (formerly Protea 4x4) – Robert Broom Road, Krugersdorp

Times: Registration: 08h30 to 09h30

Starts (3-min intervals): 09h00 to 10h00

Courses close & Prize giving / Lucky draw: 12h00

Courses: Five different courses for varying physical and technical abilities will be available ranging

from a 2.5km course for novices and children to the longest course of approx 9 km (winning

time approx. 70-75 mins). A ‘string’ course for young children will also be on offer.

Map: Scale 1:10 000, 5m contour intervals drawn by Nicholas Mulder (ROC) in April 2009 for the

Gauteng Long Distance Champs.

Terrain: Protea Ridge is situated on top of a ridge, allowing for a mixture of gradients and vegetation

types, including mixed Protea bush and open grassland. The area is 4x4 vehicle terrain, with

numerous dirt tracks in the area.

Entry Fee: Seniors (21 +) R 60.00

Juniors (- 20) R 40.00

Emit Hire R 10.00

Entry fee includes cost of entry into the area.

Free Entry on String Course for young kids

Punching: The EMIT timing system will be used for all courses.

EMIT cards may be hired by those who do not have their own.

Catering: The venue (Bosvark 4x4) will be offering drinks / food for sale.

Directions: From Joburg:

From N1 (Western Bypass of Johannesburg), take the 14th Avenue offramp and turn onto

Hendrik Potgieter Road (M47), travelling in a NW direction towards Krugersdorp. After

passing Hillfox Power Centre, turn left into Jim Fouche Road (M86) and proceed over the

Constantia Ridge. Turn right into Christiaan De Wet Road and immediately first left into

Wilgeroord Road (M86). Continue along Wilgeroord, which will become Robert Broom

Road. The entrance to the the Bosvark Adventure Park (4x4 place) is on the right hand side

just after the Noordheuwel shopping centre.

From Pretoria:

Take the R28 to Krugersdorp. Continue straight across Hendrik Potgieter at the traffic lights

and go up the pass over the ridge. Take the offramp for Robert Broom Road. This will loop

back, so you will be turning right (east) onto Robert Broom. Continue along the road for

2.5km. Bosvark Adventure Park (4x4) will be on your left opposite the Total petrol station.

The annual Melville Koppies Cross Koppie hike will be on Saturday May 1st. Park opposite the entrance at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Rd, Emmarentia. Then join Melville Koppies guides on a leisurely three hour hike over rocky ridges, through grasslands, wooded forests and a sparkling spruit. Starting time is 8am sharp. Cost is R20 per person and all donations are used for maintenance of the Koppies. Wear sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sun block and bring water and a snack in a back pack. This is not suitable for children under 10 and people with wonky joints. No dogs allowed on this hike.
